Chocolate Drop Cookies

From the kitchen of Delores Anderson.

Makes 3 dozen cookies.

1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg

1-3/4 cup cake flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup walnuts

Cream butter, shortening; add sugar gradually.  Beat in egg.  Add melted chocolate.  Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.  Stir in vanilla and nuts.

Drop on ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

For the frosting:
Add milk or cream to 2 C. sifted powdered sugar to spreading consistency. Add dash of salt and 1 tsp. vanilla. Top each cookie with walnuts.

  2. I just realized that the frosting for the chocolate drop cookies is not included in this recipe. Does anyone remember what kind of frosting it was? Maybe just a pwd sugar and milk, or cream cheese? I can't remember, but I do know they were yummy!

  5. I just looked up the recipe in my file. For the frosting:
Add milk or cream to 2 C. sifted powdered sugar to spreading consistency. Add dash of salt and 1 tsp. vanilla. Top each cookie w/walnut.
Dad thinks Grandma used to put a pecan on top, but later only frosted them. He believes the nuts in the batter were finely chopped pecans.
Also, the chocolate is 2 (1oz.) squares unsweetened choc. melted over hot water.
My recipe says this makes 3 doz. cookies. Grandma used to freeze them so she must have tripled the recipe to have lots of cookies when her grandchildren were coming!
